Base Blocking Progression
(On the Plate)
Each drill has the same three components to the recover.
First, no recover, this is to make sure the ball doesn’t stray too far away from you. Block the ball and let it travel to a stop. If it has gone too far away, smother more with the core.
Second, pointers, this is to make sure that you know exactly where the ball is to recover after the block. If you can’t find it easily, you are not tracking the ball the entire way in and after the block.
Third, find and separate, this is to make sure you know exactly where the ball is, but you have also smothered it enough to keep it close. If you have to leave your knees, it has gone too far from you. After you pick up the ball, separate your hands to mimic a throw from your knees.
